Primul reportaj american despre Holocaust: „Masacrul evreilor”, publicat în decembrie 1942
Pe 22 iulie 1942, din ghetoul din Varșovia au plecat primele vagoane către lagărele de concentrare naziste. Statisticile diferă de la autor la autor, însă șase luni mai târziu se pare că în ghetou se mai aflau doar 50.000 din cei 550.000 de evrei închiși inițial acolo. Restul fuseseră deportați;mulți muriseră deja sau aveau să moară în curând în lagărul de la Treblinka.
La cinci luni după primele deportări, pe 22 decembrie 1942, ziarul american „The New Republic” publica una dintre primele relatări despre Holocaust din presa occidentală. Intitulat Masacrul evreilor, articolul dădea detalii despre ororile împotriva evreilor din Europa și lansa acuzații ferme împotriva lui Hitler și Goebbels. Materialul semnat de Varian Fry a fost onest, curajos și scris în așa fel încât publicul american să afle despre ororile ce aveau loc în Europa.
„Sunt unele lucruri atât de oribile încât bărbații și femeile cumsecade le găsesc imposibil de crezut, atât de monstruoase încât lumea civilizată se dă înapoi în oroare, neîncrezătoare, în fața lor. Cele mai recente rapoarte despre exterminarea sistematică a evreilor în Europa nazistă intră în această categorie.”
Americanul oferă date exacte despre numărul evreilor care au fost deportați sau care au fugit de naziști. Mai mult, el vorbește în detaliu despre metodele folosite de naziști pentru torturarea și uciderea evreilor. Astfel, prin articolul lui Fry, americanii vor auzi pentru prima dată de vagoanele morții, de teribilele lagăre și de exterminarea sistematică a evreilor.

”There is starvation:Jews all over Europe are kept on rations often only one-third or one-fourth what is allowed to non-Jews. Slow death is the inevitable consequence. There is deportation:Jews by the hundreds of thousands have been packed into cattle cars, without food, water or sanitary conveniences of any sort, and shipped the whole breadth of Europe. When the cars arrive at their destination, about a third of the passengers are already dead. There are the extermination centers, where Jews are destroyed by posion gas or electricity. There are specially constructed trucks, in which Jews are asphyxiated by carbon monoxide from the exhausts, on their way to burial trenches. There are the mines, in which they are worked to death, or poisoned by fumes of metals. There is burning alive, in crematoria, or buildings deliberately set on fire. There is the method of injecting air-bubbles into the blood stream:it is cheap, clean and efficient, producing clots, embolisms and death within a few hours. And there is the good old-fashioned system of standing the victims up, very often naked, and machine-gunning them, preferably beside the graves they themselves have been forced to dig. It saves time, labor and transportation.”
